The next wave you will surf is 3D
5th of August 2010

The next wave for avid Internet surfers is the 3D Internet, surging with the possibilities that the ubiquitous, mobile presence of virtual worlds offers. Increasing computer performance, 3D graphics and Internet bandwith enable fluid use of virtual worlds. As yet, the new technology is under development – breakthrough is expected by the year 2013.

The 3D Internet is one of CIE's main research areas. Previous work in Oulu has resulted in a virtual world server and 3D web browser, realXtend. The realXtend project has become a worldwide business, and is a strong candidate for the 3D Internet platform.

The realXtend platform is open source code, which everyone - you too! - can use freely. Open source allows free software development. A recent, real-life example of open source software development is the use of realXtend as the platform for the Oulu-based School of the Future –program.

The 3D Internet is the next wave – at CIE we are keeping our (key)boards on top!
