Tulevaisuuden vilinää - the permanent art exhibition openED at CIE 16th May 2011

The opening ceremony of Tulevaisuuden Vilinää - the permanent art exhibition was held at Center for Internet Excellence, University of Oulu, on Monday 16th May 2011. The event was attended by approximately 50 visitors including artists and their family members. The director of CIE, Heikki Huomo has opened the event and connected the theme of the exhibition to CIE’s focus areas. Oulu Art School teacher and project leader Anna Parkkonen explained the background of the exhibition and some details of the paintings. Art School students have presented a short performance on the Future theme after which visitors toured the exhibition.
The paintings have been made by Oulu Art School visual art, handwork and architecture teams. The exhibition consists of approximately 90 paintings of various sizes, designed specifically for the CIE spaces. Oulu Art School 4-20 year-old students of Visual Art line have created the paintings during the spring semester 2011. Oulu Art School teachers Anna Parkkonen, Johanna Pöykkö and Eija Hirvonen worked as project leaders and designers.
"We went to visit CIE premises and started to think about what we could make for them. There are different rooms of different sizes and suitable for different purposes, from very small researchers’ rooms to lecture and conference rooms and large corridor spaces. We ended up making different sizes and shapes of paintings on plywood, because they were easy to paint at Art School and then transfer to the university.” says Anna Parkkonen. "Tulevaisuuden vilinää” is a series of paintings, which consists of three large-sized painting in the lobby. Paintings in the CIE lecture hall called Japanese Garden were designed to fit the spirit of Japanese garden by studying Bonzai trees and Ikebana flower arrangements of the Japanese culture. As a contrast to the very small researchers’ chambers, the paintings in them are quite large, kind of windows into the future.
