Oulu’s SmartTouch project awarded with the "Contactless Intelligence Monkey"
10th of May 2010
The city of Oulu with its SmartTouch project has won the Contactless Intelligence Monkey Award in the category “Public Concern”.
The Monkey Awards are presented to those companies, organizations and retailers who have done the most to embrace and implement contactless technology into their day-to-day operating practices. These awards represent a real promotional springboard and give the winners a reputation and credibility for their efforts within the industry.
The successful pilot was implemented as a part of Oulu’s ITEA SmartTouch project in 2006-2008. The project was EU’s biggest initiative focusing on testing and developing NFC technology. The national financier was Tekes.
As part of the SmartTouch project, students participated in NFC interactive time-tabling and projects, utilizing smart posters at home and school. “VIKSU” Info channel consisted of active timetable/homework and school media content.
All students taking part in the project had a smart poster at home with NFC tags for their timetable, homework, and for the school information channel. There were also smart posters in many school locations. The pilot was implemented in Laanila upper secondary school.
Technical solutions for “Viksu” info channel were realized by MSG Software, Nextime Solutions Oy, VTT and TeliaSonera. The SmartTouch project has earlier won the ITEA 2009 Achievement Award.
The Monkey Awards competition is open to all implemented contactless applications within the relevant sectors, regardless of geographic region or size of corporation.
