intel and nokia joint innovation center, oulu

Intel's and Nokia's first collaborative research laboratory, Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center, Oulu is located in the Center for Internet Excellence (CIE) at the University of Oulu. The initial framework brings about two dozen researchers sourced from the local research community to work at the co-laboratory for three years. The lab’s research activities started in August 2010.

Initially, the lab will focus on creating new and compelling Internet user experiences that leverage the rapidly increasing processing and graphics power of mobile devices. The objective of the first research project is to create a rich user experience while using 3D user interfaces and applications on mobile devices. The project targets to:

  • Develop new 3D based user interaction paradigms for mobile devices with a strong focus on creating a positive user experience. The project will utilize the processing power of new mobile devices to explore the potential of 3D user interaction and the supporting architecture.
  • Adapt network virtual environments to the mobile market through the development of a social 3D world application.
  • Support the open source community, in particular, the MeeGo and OpenSimulator communities.
